gchat is a messenger: private and group chats, channels, audio and video calls. This page describes what we store, why, and how to delete it.
What we collect
| Data | Why | Shared |
|---|---|---|
| @handle | app functionality; how people find you | no |
| Display name | app functionality; optional | no |
| Email address | registration, verification code, recovery | no |
| Message text | delivery and history, so a new device can load your chats | no |
| Photos, video, audio, files | what you send or publish | no |
| Push token | message and call notifications | yes — Google (FCM) |
| IP address (server logs) | security, abuse prevention | no |
| IP address and sign-in times (on the session record) | account security, and deciding a report: whether this is one person or a wall of fake accounts | no |
| Reports: who about, from whom, when, and the text | review by a person; your own reply to a report is kept with it | no |
A session record does not outlive the session — 180 days, after which it is deleted along with the address. Reports and the decisions on them are kept longer: they are how we answer for a decision that turns out to be wrong.
What we do not collect
No contacts, no location, no advertising, no analytics SDK, no trackers. We do not sell data.
Encryption
All traffic is TLS (HTTPS/WSS). Data at rest is not end-to-end encrypted — message content is technically readable by the server. We say so plainly rather than implying otherwise; end-to-end encryption is a goal, and this page will change when it ships.
Calls
Audio and video flow directly between participants (WebRTC), relayed through our TURN server when a direct path is impossible. Calls are never recorded or stored.
Retention and deletion
Content is kept until you delete it or delete your account. Deleting your account signs you out everywhere immediately and destroys the data after a 14-day grace period; signing in again within those 14 days cancels it. An account unopened for 18 months is deleted automatically.
You can delete your account in the app (Settings → Account → Delete account) or on this page, without installing anything.
Your rights
You may request a copy of your data, correct it, or have it deleted.
